Hot Tips

The following tips are from local area nursing moms about breastfeeding in public, working and nursing, or just tips in general. If you know of a tip that you would like to share, please email us so we can include it.

Working and Nursing Tip, from a local Wayne-Paoli counselor:

"Some moms have a difficult time pumping enough breastmilk during the day so that their baby can take only breastmilk in the bottles given at their caregiver. Since many moms are full at the first feeding of the morning, the mom can nurse the baby on one side while using a pump on the other side. This will help the mom pump out some additional breastmilk which can be used the next working day, along with the breastmilk pumped during the day. This strategy can also be used on the weekends, and can eliminate the need for supplementation with formula."

Breastmilk Storage Tip, from a local Wayne-Paoli counselor

"After expressing breastmilk, store the milk in ice cube trays. After cleaning the trays, pour the milk into the trays and freeze. When the milk is frozen, put into ziploc bags. The milk is stored in 1 oz. servings, and the proper amount that is needed for a bottle can be easily thawed."

Nursing in Public Tip, from a local Wayne-Paoli counselor

"Many moms do not feel comfortable nursing in public. If in a shopping center, you can always try to find a fitting room in a department store. At the King of Prussia Plaza, Nordstroms has a wonderful Mothers Nursing room where you can nurse. It is outfitted with comfortable couches with pillows, and allows a mom to nurse her baby in a conducive atmosphere."

Tip to reduce Sibling Rivalry, from a Nursing Supplies Store

"Some children when they become older siblings are jealous of the time the mom spends nursing the new baby. A way to reduce this sibling rivalry is to give the older child a nursing box. This box is filled with activities and toys that are brought out only when the mom is nursing the baby, and may help the sibling not feel jealous and allow the mom to nurse the baby without disruptions."
